RCS Alumni Reflect on College Life: Tobey Beyer – University of Michigan
Riverdale Review: What field of study or major are you pursuing?
Tobey Beyer: I am majoring in Sport Management.
RR: Why did you decide to attend a large university?
TB: There were many reasons I decided to choose Michigan. It was my dream school when I was young, and when I was old enough to understand what I was looking for in a college, Michigan covered all the bases. My initial passion came from my mother being an alumni there, and it only grew when I found out that they have one of the best Kinesiology programs, and amazing sports teams. I wanted to go to a larger school to meet as many people as possible. Thankfully, the cold wasn’t too much of a factor, or it definitely could’ve been an issue!
RR: What are the benefits and drawbacks of attending a large university?
TB: Especially if you go to Michigan, you will probably be coming with 10-15 other students from Riverdale, which definitely has its pros and cons. It’s awesome that you can rely on these people going into a scary, unknown situation, but at the same time that can inhibit you from getting the full college experience. I couldn’t have had a better experience at college so far. Michigan does an amazing job at mixing fun and work, so I’ve been excelling academically while having the time of my life. I would recommend Michigan to any student reading this.
RR: What were the biggest challenges you faced during your first year at college?
TB: I had a tough time making friends during my first semester. Also, the food situation was definitely rough. A big issue was that I was staying in my dorm with my roommate, and we spent a lot of time together rather than trying to meet new people.
RR: How would you describe the social life at the University of Michigan?
TB: A big aspect is figuring out if you want to join Greek life if your college has it. At some colleges, social life is dependent on Greek life. So figure out what works for you, and what social circles you’re looking for, and pursue them. But don’t be peer pressured! Only join a fraternity or sorority if you’re comfortable with the people you’re surrounding yourself with. If not, you will be putting up a facade and you will not enjoy yourself.
RR: Do you have any advice for current Riverdale seniors as they look ahead to college?
TB: The one thing I would say is to push yourself and say ‘yes’ to experiences or events that you might not have said yes to in the past. Some of my best times in college were when I decided to go with the flow. You never know how much fun you’ll have, who you’ll meet, or what you’ll experience! It’s scary leaving what’s comfortable, but at the same time, there are so many beautiful and amazing experiences ahead of you that you can’t even imagine. It goes by quickly. I remember being in your shoes less than four years ago, but it feels like it was yesterday. Enjoy every second, and remember to look back and appreciate it from time to time!
