Seniors Offer Ninth Graders Advice
We asked students in a ninth-grade advisory what they wanted anonymous ad- vice on; a senior advisory responded. Here are some of their helpful responses.
What is the hardest class in high school?
“I don’t think there is one class at Riverdale that everyone agrees is the hard- est. I am more of a humanities person and generally struggle more with STEM classes, so the hardest class for me has been Calculus B and Physics II.”
“Constructing America is challenging, but it’s a really fun experience.”
How often should you set up meetings with teachers?
I don’t have many frees and I always feel guilty to “take up” their lunchtime or after school time. “Don’t feel guilty! Teachers want to help you be the best student you can be. I would recommend meeting with teachers when you feel confused on a subject you have spent class time going over.”
What are some reputable academic awards to aspire to build your resume?
“Do not spend high school thinking about getting things on your resume! Do what you love and if you love it and put in the effort, academic awards may come your way naturally.”
What is the right way to balance school life and social life?
“You know when you are putting too much time in your school life or social life. Deep down we all know when we feel balanced and unbalanced. Just remember it is okay to ask for extensions, it is okay to say no to friends, it is okay to do what feels right for you at that moment.”
Is applying to college stressful?
“I recommend trying to do as much over the summer as possible, so in the fall you can focus on schoolwork. Also, the environment among the rest of your class can make it more stressful too, so try not to get too sucked into gossip about who is applying where.”
“Yes, but you will find a place that is right for you. I mean we go to Riverdale, so I know that everyone will be fine during the process. Try your best to not get swept up in the social aspect of the college process. It is and should be personal.”
